It wasn't the aliens she had to worry about; it was the humans.

A troubled young woman is recruited by a race of ancient alien explorers to be their emissary to save the human race from extinction. The problem is that not everyone believes the world is doomed, and not everyone trusts the aliens' motives. Holly Burton will have to overcome opposition from world leaders, attacks by religious zealots, assassination attempts, intractable bureaucracies, and her own fears and doubts if she is to save the human race, not just from the coming apocalypse, but from itself.

She will have to become a very different person to lead a remnant of humanity into space and become the architect of a new civilization. The question is: Can she use the extraordinary knowledge and abilities given to her without losing her own humanity in the process?

The story concept was excellent but the execution was mediocre. The writing was also mediocre; frequently juvenile. The Fragment and it's kin were a huge missed opportunity and ultimately were a great disappointment, depicted as behaving very human-like despite being supposedly so alien. The use of alien technology was poorly thought out. Many times while listening, I had the thought "was this written by a 7th grader?"

On a future Earth where America is an autocratic christian theocracy, the impending destruction of the planet is denied and saving humanity is left in the hands of a multidimensional alien and a hard partying professor. The difficulties that surround saving humanity in such an environment are explored thoroughly from geopolitical, technology and human perspectives and I found it to be a “can’t stop” listen.

So often, decent books NEVER show up as recommendations. This is free with Audible Plus but it was practically last on the list! It would have been worth a credit!

Very entertaining

Great story and excellent narration, but the bad guys are the white, male, Christian government of the US. They are extremists in this story, but this arc is getting old....especially if you are a white, male, Christian reader. We want to read stories like this without feeling bashed by it.

Disappointed in the Wokeness

This book is just jammed with gooey delicious science fiction imagery that very much reminded me of the classics. However, the story and the characters are atrocious and feels like the main character is a fourteen year old boy’s fantasy. Also, could do without the ridiculous world building and geopolitical understanding of said fourteen year old… We don’t read these books for the characters and the plot holes though, we read them for the speculative sci-fi and this author does it well. Some great scenes with some interesting technological concepts. Just ignore the bad and pay attention to the good. Also, be prepared for a lot of “evil humans destroying the earth” tropes.

Summary: Great fun for fans of sci-fi, terrible characters/world building and quite preachy at times.

Very fun imagery in the vein of classic sci-fi
