Critic reviews

"Women in an emotionally abusive marriage do not need another book on how to have a good marriage; those books rub salt in raw wounds. No, they desperately need this book so that they can diagnose just how bad their marriage is and then, with Leslie’s clear expertise, develop a plan that will either begin to turn their marriage around...or give them a wise route of escape." (Dee Brestin, author of Idol Lies and the Friendships of Women)

I didn't get this book until a few years after divorcing. Leslie Vernick's wisdom & experience combines to explain many of the dynamics I've struggled with for so long. I am confident that leaving my destructive marriage was the right thing for me to do,. Even so, I wish I would have learned the tools explained here, so I might have been equipped to "stay well" before leaving...and "leave well" when it was time.

I wish I would have had this book sooner.

This is a must listen for anyone who has grown up in a cult, fundamentalist or “Christian” home. It’s extremely clear on identifying marital abuse, especially that by men who have been taught it’s okay to be authoritarian and they’re “the king of the mountain” so to speak. Very helpful, and extensive resources given

I wish I had read this book years ago. One thing worse than being in an abusive marriage is having the church tell you that you can’t leave it. I was aware of the provisions Moses have in the law that allowed abused or neglected wives to freed from unloving and brutal marriages. But so many say Jesus got rid of the law. Now you must stay. They effectively made Jesus my oppressor. No more liberation for those in bondage.

I am thankful that I did eventually get Biblical Counseling from a wonderful lady that gives similar instructions to this book. She was a lifeline at that time.

I highly recommend this book. But I know that for those in such marriages it would be difficult to purchase it and hide it from their spouse. I avoided buying books with such titles out of fear of him finding it and his reaction. But try to get it and hide it well. Thinking of you ladies still enduring all this. My heart goes out to you.

This should be required reading for pastors
