A complex story told well. The characters are finely drawn. The writing and narration transport the listener back in time to the front lines of the Roman expansion into Germany. The author is sympathetic to both the Roman legionaries and the German tribesmen as well as their wives, lovers, and extended families. Each novel in this series is better than the one before and better than any other series I have ever read on ancient Rome.

Gripping and breathtaking

Not enough balance between battle and the remainder of the story. The actual battles seem to be secondary with just minimal mention even during the final battle.

Story had great potential.
