Smuggling is supposed to be the kind of job where you're in, you're out, and no one ever knew you were there.

Simple. Boring, even.

But that's only when you're doing it right.

Unfortunately, Avery and the rest of the crew of the Kingfisher have hit a snag, one in the form of a strange woman living in a hallway ceiling at Installation 23, and from there on out, it seems like they're ever only one jump ahead of the next guy looking to kill them. Increasingly enmeshed in complex politics and missing their blissful ignorance, the crew of the Kingfisher are going to have to make some hard decisions about what role they really want to play in galactic events, and just how far from their mundane world of weapons smuggling they're willing to venture.

Climb aboard. The flight of the Kingfisher is about to begin.

I'm always on the lookout for books that reminds me of Firefly. There's something about an interesting crew that gets themselves wrapped up in interesting stories that I love. This hits all the marks. I've listened to better performances, but honestly, this was sufficient. Not ground breaking, but I've also listened to performances that were bad enough that I spotted listening to grab the Kindle edition. This was fine. One of the better parts was the fact that while it is clearly set up for sequels, the story felt wrapped up. I consume bunches of books, and honestly, I seldom finish a series. So it's very frustrating when I finish a book and the book ends leaving me feeling unfulfilled. This book didn't do that. The ending was just right. Exciting, pretty riviting, but still left me knowing there was more if I wanted it.

Lovable crew with a story that makes you want more.

Unique story, great world building and character development. It hit all the sweet spots, including more stories to follow. It took a chapter before my mind linked with the narrator (not the voice I expected); once I got used to the voice, I really enjoyed it. Small criticism: women's voices could be better. They sound like a like a guy trying to sound like a female. Some of it was tone vocal range and tone, some of it was.cadence and timing. It doesn't bug me enough to keep me from buying the next book.

great story & characters
