Simon Moody’s mom inherits her wealthy Uncle Edmund’s estate, giving them more than enough money to pay all four years of Simon’s upcoming college tuition. The only problem is, they have to leave Brooklyn, move to the little town of Caligo Falls, and make Wilder House, the infamous Victorian mansion built by Edmund’s grandfather in 1905, their new home. They’ve also inherited a mysterious caretaker named Harrington, and a punctual but melancholy cook, Mrs. Morley. Edmund Wilder leaves Simon a mysterious ring, along with a cryptic note, a quote from Hamlet. Simon and his new friend Clara Barley soon find themselves entangled in the unfathomable, sometimes terrifying, sometimes heartbreaking mysteries of Wilder House.

This was a fun story with a solid narration. The plot and pacing was good enough to keep me interested until the end with the only significant downside being a quasi cliffhanger that T's up the sequel ... which I will probably pick up sometime.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

An engaging, atmospheric mystery with a strong gothic edge that easily earns a full five stars!!! The story builds beautifully through a series of eerie, layered encounters, and every aspect—from the setting to the unfolding secrets—kept me intrigued and fully invested. When Simon moves to a small town and inherits a strange Victorian mansion, he’s quickly pulled into its unsettling mysteries alongside a new friend, and it all comes together in a way that’s both haunting and emotionally engaging.

This was my first by this author, and I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the series. The narration by Christian J Casas was very well done, making this an entertaining listen all around.

When Simon Moody’s family inherits his great-uncle’s estate, they trade Brooklyn for the eerie town of Caligo Falls and move into Wilder House, a mysterious Victorian mansion with a shadowy past. Along with their inheritance come a cryptic ring, a puzzling note, and two unsettling staff members who seem tied to the house’s secrets.

As Simon and his new friend Clara begin to explore, they uncover strange, and sometimes frightening, mysteries hidden within Wilder House—drawing them deeper into a story that is as haunting as it is emotional.

The author, Tom Hoffman, crafts an intriguing and well-layered storyline that immediately draws the reader in and maintains a steady sense of curiosity throughout. The pacing is thoughtfully managed, with dialogue that feels natural and authentic while also moving the narrative forward in a purposeful way. Character development is particularly strong, with each individual given depth and dimension that evolves as the story unfolds. The vivid details enrich the setting and bring scenes to life, while unexpected connections between characters add an extra layer of interest and complexity. The supernatural elements are seamlessly woven into the narrative, enhancing the mystery without overwhelming it, and are handled in a way that feels both imaginative and believable.

The narrator, Christian J Casas, delivers a clear and polished performance that keeps the story easy to follow while maintaining a steady, well-paced flow from beginning to end. Their ability to subtly differentiate characters through slight shifts in tone, rhythm, and speech pattern is particularly effective, allowing each voice to feel distinct without becoming exaggerated or distracting. These nuanced changes enhance the listening experience, helping the story unfold naturally while keeping the listener fully engaged. Overall, the narration is immersive and consistent, drawing the listener in and holding their attention throughout.

It’s a fresh and compelling take on the genre, weaving together mystery, magic, and emotion in a way that feels both original and accessible. This is a story that will resonate with a wide range of readers, leaving a lasting impression well beyond its final pages.

This is the third Tom Hoffman book that I had listened to and I really like his style. This is the first book in this series, but I have listened to two other of his works and I like them all. I am not a young reader, but the lightheartedness and Interesting imagination that Tom writes in is very refreshing.

The narrator is also very good with many voices and the production quality is also very easy to listen to and nice. I recommend this book for any age and it will help you decompress from the pressures of the world, clean and light.

Refreshing
