This was a wonderful book about a young Norwegian girl, Astra, who falls in love with Max, a civil engineer, who is with the German Army.

Max is assigned to be billeted in Astra’s and her father’s small home during WWII. Astra wants to hate Max, but he unexpectedly turns out to be a kind, compassionate, thoughtful, family-oriented young man, so unlike what Astra expected any German soldier to be. Despite Astra’s initial anger, resentment and rudeness towards him, Max is soon pitching in around their small farm and helping Astra’s father to repair the house.

Before she knows what’s happening, Astra soon falls for Max, something that’s a serious taboo in a country that has been invaded and destroyed by the Germans. Keeping their relationship from everyone, including Astra’s father, is far from easy. Soon a child is involved and everyone’s world is turned upside down.

There is much to enjoy in this book — espionage, friendship, family relationships that are strained just by Max’s presence, a love story, and a couple who can’t find refuge anywhere because of their nationalities.

I highly recommend this book. Both the story and the narration were excellent. I will immediately be looking for more books by this author.
