This walk through the book of Hebrews is intended to be faithful to the intended meaning of Scripture. I believe the main point of Hebrews to warn against falling back into a works-based view of salvation. To this point across, the author repeatedly presses Christ Jesus as better than any other being, revealing the New Covenant to be better (and different from) the Old Covenant.

Many have referred to the Bible as the gospel in the Old Testament concealed, in the New Testament revealed. But redemptive history is not divided so neatly, and the redeemer was progressively revealed to God’s elect in the Old Covenant, bringing us together with them in the New Covenant. We see in Hebrews 11 the review of some of the Old Covenant saints in the “hall of faith” followed by this observation: (Hebrews 11:39-40) All these were approved through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.

We ought to be humbled as we consider these saints – they had faith in the promised redeemer with far less testimony than we have. They lived and died not receiving the fulfillment of the promises, which found their “yes and amen” in Christ Jesus. They anticipated the fulfillment of the promises documented in their Scripture, knowing a plot of dirt in the mid-east was not that. Abraham is said to have known while he was yet living in a tent in that region that the promise was the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God (Heb. 11:10). We live in the fuller light of God’s revelation, seeing clearly the implications of being found in Christ rather than chained to devil by our sin. Our focus should not be on the Middle East, but on the heavenly places! Ours is a greater revelation that brings greater responsibility to be faithful with His message. All the more we should realize that nothing temporal can serve a higher purpose than being a type of the eternal. We are citizens in heaven, aliens here.
