But when an overseas property developer threatens to evict the residents from their homes and raze Witchaven to the ground in the name of progress, all seems lost . . . until the day a mysterious fog bank creeps inland.

Admittedly body horror isn’t my go to. Just don’t find it scary. And the same can be said here. But the book is still a great read/listen. You’re extremely invested in our main characters life and the creature isn’t what you expect.

Nice little body horror

I'm surprised this doesn't have higher ratings. Firstly, this story was the perfect length and doesn't overstay it's welcome like most horror novels. The setting was beautiful, and the horror was gruesome, yes, but it didn't feel over the top just to be shocking. The depictions of the sea creature are also really creative. The narrator also was the perfect fit. Also, definitely has some funny moments too (I wonder who Grant reminds me of, a billionaire buying up beautiful land in Scotland for a golf course lol). I'll definitely keep an eye out for future works from this author :)

Loved this!!

Less “the dunwitch horror” more “the shape of water”. It was all right but I was expecting something like the movie “the grabbers”.

Kinda boring

Almost! It veers off in its own direction away from Clive Barker's classic, but its definitely a blood cell swimming in the same cardiovascular system!
However, the ways it does differently from the conventions of Horror-romance placed by Barker's novella set it apart in ways that overall take away the punch over horror stories in this niche have delivered.
The reliance on ultra violence and soft core porno moments to be the carrier of the horror, when that's simply not scary but rather just kinda unsanitary, took me out when I found myself invested in the plot between the main characters romantic moments.
There is some lovely catharsis in some of the mayhem though, some people do deserve what's coming to them in this story. No spoilers~

Horror-romance with a 50/50 split of pain and passion can work, it works very well in fact, fear and lust come from the same general section of the brain after all. But when the fear needs to be ramped up this story kinda fall flat and almost comes off as comedy.

The big annoyance for me was the voice acting to be honest. It was stunted and felt like a paycheck for the narrator, not much investment in the story was made, and I feel the performance was hurt by that.

Stayed on the edge of my seat to see what Avalon would do next, enjoyed the ending.

Kept me guessing.
