In the quiet winter of 1977 Ohio, 12-year-old Jacob lives in a small town with his distant mother and absent father. When he discovers a mysterious name scrawled on an old map of Bishop's Ridge—a remote, overgrown area outside town—his innocent curiosity ignites an obsession.

What begins as boyhood exploration soon uncovers hidden family secrets, a forgotten house in the woods, and shadowy figures watching from the trees. As Jacob pieces together fragments of the truth, a darker realization emerges: the real hunter has been inside him all along, awakened by betrayal, isolation, and the pull of inherited darkness.

The Hunter Within is a tense, character-driven psychological thriller that blends coming-of-age innocence with creeping suspense, building to a haunting revelation about how the hunter and the hunted can become one.

Received a free copy for review: The story felt like a bit of a nothing-burger at first listen, but I’ve been on a horror kick, recently, and can’t decide if it’s simply more subtle than the rest of my current Bill of Fare.

It’s well-written and well narrated, Dialouge is little stilted in a few minor places, but it kept my attention and the characters are interesting.

I found this short story held my interest much more than most short stories do. It reminds of the types of works I read in my college Literature classes. The kind that are thought provoking and require you to draw your own conclusions. I could see myself discussing what the author’s point was or what the characters were thinking and feeling etc. I also appreciated that the narrator was neutral to the story. He did a great job not standing out, which was what this story needed. I felt like was reading instead of listening.

A boy entering teenhood scrutinizes his family structure and habits, and makes discoveries that haunt him. Armed with determination to find the answers, he investigates. Narrated with gritty intensity and boyish innocence, Danny Smith conveys the thoughts and words of the main character with finesse. The story is short but pointed, and its outcome likely to linger for a time after. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 2.0x.]
