#1 NYT Bestselling Author “My favorite kind of whodunit, kept me guessing all the way through, and reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best — with an extra dose of acid.” — Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient

From the author of the Reese Witherspoon book club pick The Guest List

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect...

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

The trip begins innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps, just as a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead. . . and another of them did it.

Better story than A Dark Dark Wood but man, the similarities are lawsuit worthy. Kind of strange that it slipped through.

In a Dark, Dark wood?

while the style of writing - a series of monologues - 61 in all - is quite novel, it makes the story quite irritatingly back-and-forth, ponderous and slow.

ponderous, tedious and rather improbable.

Fantastic narration of a very predictable story filled with stereotypes from the 1980s Worth a listen just for the narration. But all of Foley’s books are the same: rich kid gets what’s coming to him simply because he’s rich.

Such a predictable formula

This is the second book of Lucy Foley's that my bookclub has read. The Guest list was such a big hit We decided to read the next in line. The Hunting party did night disappoint or give up its secrets until the very end! FOLEY is an excellent story teller. The only reason I dinged the performances one star was the male performances, in particular Doug's, were a bit droll and monotonous. But overall excellent story

I’ve listened to other things by this author, and was intrigued by the premise of this book. I usually really enjoy this type of story - isolated group, murder, old tensions coming to a head - but for some reason this book just fell really flat. There was no sense of justice done for any of the characters. The worst ones got away with everything they did, and the only one that wasn’t totally boring was the one who was killed. The only subplot I was interested in was the game keeper and Heather, but there was very little satisfaction there either. I don’t need a big, sloppy love story, but just something to make me feel like I hadn’t completely wasted several hours of my life would have been nice.

Just ok
