Critic reviews

“As a lifelong fan of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, I could not have guessed that the book I most needed to read was an amazing yarn of Jack and Tollers turned detectives. This multiverse adventure is imaginative, intriguing, and wildly satisfying. The premise seems, at first, almost zany—yet, as the narrative develops through richly drawn moments and pitch-perfect dialogue, the Inklings’ destiny as sleuths becomes inevitable. Because the book includes a cast of who’s who from early twentieth-century British literature and a brilliant framework, the reader will experience these titans of storytelling in an marvelously fresh way. It is now possible to believe that the Inklings of our world squandered their true potential.”—John Hendrix, New York Times bestselling illustrator and author of The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R Tolkien

The Inklings Detective Agency by John R. Kelly is a delightful achievement. Part literary homage, part historical fiction, and part detective mystery, Kelly’s work invites readers into the world of Oxford at one of the richest moments in literary history. Fans of Lewis and Tolkien, Doyle and Sayers, will find much to admire here as this novel inhabits their personalities and allows readers to see them not only as towering literary figures but as friends working together. I admire this work of imaginative re-creation, and I enthusiastically recommend it.”—Chris Palmer, PhD, dean and professor at Barnett College of Ministry and Theology, Southeastern University

“John R. Kelly’s The Inklings Detective Agency is a brilliant and fascinating novel that will delight and move readers that are admirers of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams, Dorothy Sayers, and Agatha Christie. This book conveys how goodness, beauty, and truth triumph over darkness, and it is a great contribution to the Inklings canon of literature!”—Justin Wiggins, author of Surprised by Agape and Tír na nÓg

I don't usually read murder mysteries, but I loved this books' historical setting. The characters were real people who lived in that Era and knew one another in the area where the story is set. Many of the locations still exist and can be visited today-I'd love to see them!

The author's descriptions made me feel like I was there. I felt like I could sense the atmosphere in the different scenes. As the story progressed, I felt like I knew the Inklings to a certain extent. I liked how they related to each other. Also their willingness to support and be available to help each other do what they were qualified to do.

I liked that there was a clear distinction between good and evil. The story showed the contrast between the lives of people who chose to live by Godly principles and the destruction of multiple lives when choosing to live by what was right in their own eyes.

Rupert Degas as narrator was exceptional and added immensely to the atmosphere and personalities of the individuals.

In Conclusion, I highly recommend this book and would love for the Inklings to "step into another version of the past".

Terrific story where both good and bad are represented well. The performance was absolutely exemplary and added so much to this reader’s grasp of the evil. I look forward to the next installment and hope there will be many more.

Imagine following your writer heroes as they solve a puzzle of a murder together, and they happen to be Agatha Christie, C. S. Lewis, and J. R. R. Tolkien with the help of other amazing authors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries!

This book was a delightful, well researched, story of our beloved authors solving a murder mystery. It was written beautifully! And in my opinion Kelly was flawless in bringing to life a very believable count of what would have been like to have The Inklings (Tolkien, Lewis and other authors) become detectives hired by Doyle!

Imagine Doyle, walking in on you and friends to ask you to be a real life Sherlock Holmes!

The mystery is intriguing but as a fan of Tolkien and Lewis, I appreciate the historical context and personal connection this book has to the classic books that I love.

Loved how Kelly created the brotherly connection between Tolkien and Lewis, their friendship was fascinating and comforting.

This book is full of historical information, thoughts, and quotes from the works of these amazing authors, used throughout this book to help us recreate what would have been like if Tolkien and Lewis had indeed partaken in solving murders with their fellow Inklings.

Then we have to Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers who Tolkien and Lewis need to help them solve and prevent another murder.

This book is a creative, comforting and masterful story that will challenge your sleuthing skills and entertain you with the personal thoughts and experiences of some amazing writers!

Absolutely Delightful!!!
