In a kingdom built on dragon fire and fragile alliances, Alyria Vanguard is determined to rewrite her fate. After years of grueling training, she’s finally earned her place in The KingsGuard—an elite force of dragon riders sworn to defend the realm. But when she arrives at NorthernThrone, she finds herself in an unpredictable squad: a sharp-eyed elven archer, a fiery dwarven smith, a jovial warrior, and their brooding Aerial Leader, Tristan. As danger gathers at the Kingdom’s borders, tensions flare within her new team, and Alyria quickly realizes loyalty is both her greatest strength—and her most dangerous weakness. But when a dark and enigmatic figure steps out of the shadows, everything Alyria thought she knew begins to unravel. Wielding forbidden power and secrets that could shatter the Kingdom, he offers her an impossible choice: remain loyal to Tristan and the KingsGuard, or risk everything for a truth that could destroy them all. As the Kingdom teeters on the brink of war, Alyria must confront her deepest fears and darkest desires. Loyalty. Love. Survival. In the KingsGuard, no one can have all three.

The KingsGuard is a quick read that draws you in quickly. The character dynamics and banter were one of several highlights of this book that added personality and energy to this book. Alyria Vanguard was easy to root for and watching her growth unfold was one of my favorite parts.
Kennedy Walker does a great job grounding the reader in setting details. I never felt disoriented and there were some very distinct and memorable places. The plot itself delivers twists I didn't see coming, along with some intriguing surprises that raise the stakes in a satisfying way.
It certainly leaves you eager for the second book.

Epic Fantasy with great characters and story.
