The messianic beliefs of radical LDS fundamentalists Dan Lafferty and his brother Ron drove them to commit an unspeakable crime. This is a riveting, raw, and unfiltered look at the Lafferty family saga from a daughter who lived it, and of her journey to self-love and forgiveness.

Rebecca Lafferty grew up with a volatile, erratic, and ultimately notorious father, Dan Lafferty. She carried the scars of her traumatic upbringing through childhood and into adulthood. But most of all, Rebecca carried the horror of learning about the cold-blooded murder of her aunt and infant cousin in 1984, perpetrated by Dan and Ron according to a revelation Ron had received—as profiled in the Jon Krakauer book and FX/Hulu series Under the Banner of Heaven.

Now, in this riveting memoir, Rebecca tells her own story of survival and healing. Her correspondence with Dan—serving life in prison—insights from relatives, and most importantly, her own lived experience, give her an astoundingly deep point of view on the lead-up to the tragedy and its aftermath.

In this book, Rebecca hopes to encourage other survivors of abuse and trauma to chart their own path to healing and peace.

Critic reviews

"For years, her life was defined by the violence of others. Now, Rebecca Lafferty tells the story of surviving the unthinkable—and finding the strength to heal. I applaud Rebecca’s strength to put her story into the world. This is how we break cycles and change lives."—Kimberly Shannon Murphy, author of Glimmer: A Story of Survival, Hope, and Healing

It was hard to listen to partly because of the content, but mostly because of the whiny voice of the reader. Very sad story.

I really could not understand the choices she made over and over again.

I liked it but then it got too spiritual and religious for me… it became hard to follow and seemed a little crazy.

Mediocre

As a child in Idaho Falls but not of the Morman faith in the late 50’s- early 60’s the compelling story was of her childhood and what was expected then.
Her path and trauma seemed plausible. However her lack of awareness and subserve choices made no sense.
Coming into “the light” with self help many of us tried. Helpful but her not figuring out becoming pregnant again and again lessens credibility about becoming a spiritual master

Selfish or Delusional

Challenging listen for multiple reasons. The voice acting seemed too animated for this story. I kept thinking she would be great for children’s books but not for such heavy content. Regarding the narrative- clearly Ms. Lafferty strived to overcome her familial circumstances and her own obstacles. Her language demonstrates her deep knowledge of therapy and trauma recovery, and yet her life choices continually puzzle the reader. I applaud her bravery in sharing her story.

The voice that read this drove me nuts! I did all I could to get through it with her Whiney voice. First audible I have thought was a waste and torture to listen to!

The girl that wrote this is as crazy as her father.
