What would you pay for freedom?

Your body?

Wynn is a carpenter in a small town in Northern Rhosan, but after he is torn from his family by ruthless Victors, he'll have to learn to survive beneath their rule. When he is forced to hunt with the silent, stoic Dyfan, the two men forge a bond that might be enough to shelter them from a life of violence and cruelty.

Your people?

Basia and Danae are the children of nobles in the elegant, educated Phecean Confederacy. When Basia starts to discover just how horrifying the lives of slaves in her country are, she’s faced with a terrible choice: does she step up to reshape her home at the risk of losing her closest friend, or does she keep quiet and let nothing change? Dealing with the difficulties of her budding gender identity would be hard enough without the lives of millions on her shoulders.

Your mind?

Deep in the Tundra’s frozen heart, the daughter of a medicine woman learns to make poison. The dreams it gives her are full of blood, war, and terrible purpose, but when Iniabi’s village is raided by foreign soldiers, it’s all she can do to stay alive. Iniabi will have to use all the Tundra has taught her as fate pulls her across the continent, but when it comes to the fate of her people, it’s not enough just to survive.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It doesn’t pull any punches and gets pretty brutal at times but it was very satisfying to see this cast of characters start to fight back against what’s wrong in this world. There are alot of POV characters to get attached to and I was very pulled in by Iniyabi’s chapters and Danae and Basia’s too. Can’t wait for the next one.

I will follow Iniyabi to hell and back

You're going to love this book if you: 1) value diversity in your fantasy, 2) enjoy epic fantasy, particularly fantasy with a soft magic system, 3) you enjoy a book that explores complex and sometimes heavy theming.

I'm a big fan of Liv & Sterling and this book did not disappoint! I have read hard copies of many of their prior books. One thing that has shone in all of their writing (and this book is no exception) is their exceptional story telling, character building, and relationships building. The audio book component made this more accessible for me where I am right now with scheduling and the vocal performance was very well done.

The relationships between and motivations of each character feel real and grounded. I found myself understanding the decisions and reasoning of each character, even when it infuriated me. *cough* looking at you Luce *cough* !!!

One of the things that strengthens relationships and characters is their rich and diverse cultural setting the authors provide, adding to that grounded nature.

This is certainly epic fantasy with some classical magical elements, but I would define this as a soft magic system that is driven primarily by the relationships and cultural relevance that is outlined throughout.

And of course what drew me to these authors many years ago - diversity in fantasy! Strong female leads, LGBTQIA+ perspectives, and cultural sensitivity are all things that have a home in these stories and invite the reader in to experience this diversity.

Give this a listen! As a fan of fantasy I don't think you'll regret it :)

I learned to love every character pretty quickly into the book. I had to stop listening at times because the tension in conversations was so vivid I needed a break. Each characters’ voices were crystal clear and distinct throughout and their character growth always felt true to the character as initially established. I really bought into the world and appreciate the different viewpoints showcasing different aspects of the world the authors built.

Minor Spoilers below:

I really appreciated how interwoven many of the PoVs were even if they never/rarely interacted. My favorite PoVs were Danae and Basia and seeing them grow overtime. I think their eventual relationship with Iniabi was seeded quite well with the duo's love of pirate queens.

I do think that the two contender PoVs felt the most distant from the others which makes sense given their enslavement. I just imagined they'd play a larger role connecting the world and other PoVs given the title of the book.

A Fantastic Epic filled with Character Growth

If you love rich world building with a deep and complex ensemble cast of characters, then this is for you!! I became so invested in every single one of the story lines. I love the strong (not stereotypical at all!!!) female characters and the beautiful inclusivity of the LGBTQ characters as well.

I can’t wait for the next one!

Wonderful Fantasy Read!
