In this stunning bestseller praised as "our era's Handmaid's Tale," a fierce new power has emerged—and only women have it (Washington Post).

In The Power, the world is a recognizable place: there's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family.

But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power: they can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets. From award-winning author Naomi Alderman, The Power is speculative fiction at its most ambitious and provocative, at once taking us on a thrilling journey to an alternate reality, and exposing our own world in bold and surprising ways.

"Captivating, fierce, and unsettling...I was riveted by every page. Alderman's prose is immersive and, well, electric." —New York Times Book Review

Editor's Pick

It's a gender bender (too soon?)
"I love a truly post-apocalyptic novel, in which we've moved far past the point of catastrophe and destruction. Society has been rebuilt, and its members are left puzzling over the artifacts salvaged from our current civilization, trying to piece together the facts of our world. In Alderman's version, the patriarchy has been flipped on its head, with women the dominant gender, and Alderman paints a vivid picture of just what extreme circumstances it took to get us there. (Spoiler alert: it's not pretty.)"

Super weird science fiction set in the near future that seemed oh so real to me. Some parts bordered on horror and language was edgy so this might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it was a very satisfying read at this moment in history. What woman would not want the power to shock the daylights out of someone (read: a man) with just her thoughts! Kudos to Naomi Alderman for her creative twists and turns and for making me see the world we live in now from a new angle. Would love to discuss this one with a friend over coffee or a glass of wine. So much potential for this premise, so woefully squandered. I really wanted to love this book, but between characters I didn't like, story that refused to go anywhere for the first 2/3 of the book, and painfully flat writing, I found myself just trudging through this one. by the time it finally caught my interest in the last few chapters, I was just ready for it to be over.

Wanted to enjoy it more

First- best narration there is. Second- about a zillion times better than the series on Prime. The author is free, uncensored and without remorse. Yes, life on earth has been THIS BAD for women, and yes this tale nails that pain and the thirst for revenge. And the twist, the ending…the lesson! As Eve’s voice said, thinking there’s ’two’ is the problem. Masterpiece!

Fantastic! Relentless, vicious and gutsy!

Best book I’ve read in a looong time. I was already recommending it to reader friends and to my 21yo daughter before I was halfway finished. The narrator was absolutely perfect!!

Mind= Blown

The narration bugged me so much I stopped listening for months. Couldn’t tell if I didn’t like the book or the narrator. Turns out I didn’t like either. 6 months later and a 2nd attempt, I found the characters unconvincing. The relationships between them felt forced or flat. It didn’t help that so many were read as whiners.

Adjoa Andoh also narrated "Americanah" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi which I also struggled to connect with. It was a much more compelling story and I was able to get past Adjoa's characterizations.

I may try to pick this up as a paperback or library borrow. I've heard decent things about it but after 2 attempts I'm 5 hours away from the end and simply don't want to listen to the over acting

Did not work for me...narration bugged me!
