“A masterpiece that can compare with Steinbeck’s East of Eden. … Some books make you laugh; some make you cry; some make you think. The Prince of Tides is a rarity: It does all three.” — Detroit Free Press

A modern American classic and a family saga that spans decades, this is the story of the volatile Tom Wingo, his brilliant but troubled twin sister, Savannah, and the complex and damaging family legacy they share. Moving between the sparkling glamour of New York City and the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina low country, The Prince of Tides is Pat Conroy’s masterwork.

“A big, sprawling saga of a novel…the kind you hole up with and spend some days with and put down feeling you have emerged from a terrible, wonderful spell.” San Francisco Chronicle

“A literary gem . . . The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.” —The Pittsburgh Press

I revisited this book in audio version and am so glad I did. It’s a beautiful story and is narrated perfectly in this production. If you’ve only ever seen the film, you owe it to yourself to read or listen to the book. The story is much fuller and more resonant.

Brilliant — it holds up

I agree that those with depression should listen later. A beautiful use of language; great character development; painful in many parts. So many illustrations of mental illness from narcissism to psychosis and how the illnesses impacted a man’s ability to define himself. Very impactful, will listen again. I thought the narration was fine, female voices weren’t girlie girlie but for the characters portrayed the voices were a good fit.

A great saga

This book should come with a warning so I’ll offer one here. Read only if you want to live. And only if you are willing to risk raw truth telling to do so: To truly come alive anew to the horror and the wonder of your own one beautiful storied life. And if you are willing to dance for long seasons with ambivalence to catch brief glimpses of beauty wild enough to strike thunder in your soul. If so, you will not regret it.

Splendid, achingly true, golden
