Maybe Number Thirteen, Small Street, isn’t the top Sydney address, but Sarah, and her partner Jon, are fed up with house-hunting, so they buy the old home. After renovations they move in, only to be immediately beset with strange problems. Most of these incidents are ‘predicted’ by Sarah’s six-year-old son Sandy, who tells her he talks to houses and they answer him. Why does baby Laura wail and cry every time she’s put to sleep in her new room? Why does it always feel icily cold inside the house? Sandy insists a malevolent being haunts the house. Jon’s ridicule of this whole concept begins to threaten their tenuous relationship, for something is definitely beginning to affect Jon’s mind. The sudden reappearance of Sarah’s ex-husband Dominic, and his quest to reconnect with Sandy, his son, becomes a challenge and a major complication. However, Sarah finds Dominic’s presence a calming influence. Her old feelings for him resurface, to contrast with the dramatic changes in Jon’s mental demeanor – his worsening headaches, his temper towards Sandy, deteriorating depression, and finally his assault on Sarah. Is the influence of the malevolent being the reason for Jon’s violent behavior? Jon disappears, and Sarah’s research discovers the appalling truth about Number Thirteen. She realizes they must leave the house, but Jon returns, wreaking a terrible vengeance.
