From the winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize, an extraordinary history of the meteoric rise and fall of George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham.

As King James I’s favourite, Buckingham was also his confidant, gatekeeper, advisor and lover. When Charles I succeeded his father, he was similarly enthralled and made Buckingham his best friend and mentor. A dazzling figure on horseback and a skilful player of the political game, Buckingham rapidly transformed the influence his beauty gave him into immense wealth and power. He became one of the most flamboyant and enigmatic Englishmen at the heart of seventeenth-century royal and political life.

With a novelist’s touch, Lucy Hughes-Hallett transports us into a courtly world of masques and dancing, exquisite clothes, the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, gender-fluidity, same-sex desire, and appallingly rudimentary medicine. Witch hunts coexisted with Descartian rationality and public opinion was becoming a political force. Falling from grace spectacularly, Buckingham came to represent everything that was wrong with the country.

From kidnappings and murder plots to men weeping in Parliament over civil liberties,The Scapegoat navigates love, war-fever and pacifism in a society on the brink of cataclysmic change. In this immersive and authoritative account, Hughes-Hallett summons an era that still resonates today.

Always been fascinated by the story of King James I and his infamous favorite George Villiers, and The Scapegoat delivers a rich, almost theatrical account of his meteoric rise and brutal fall. This story has long captivated historians with works like The King’s Assassin, Queen James, and The Six Lives of James I offering competing interpretations of their relationship and influence. Hughes Hallett follows Villiers from obscurity to becoming the most powerful man in England before turning into a national scapegoat whose assassination felt almost inevitable, and what stands out is how she layers conflicting perspectives from the king, court, critics, and even his killer, showing Villiers as both man and symbol. Beneath it all is the persistent suggestion of a love affair between James and Villiers, expressed through letters and intimacy yet never openly named, exposing the hypocrisy of a court that depended on their closeness while refusing to define it, captured in the line “he was loved beyond all other men, and hated beyond all measure,” which reflects how admiration and resentment became inseparable. The mystery lingers, was it political, emotional, romantic, or all at once within the constraints of the time, and themes of ambition, perception, propaganda, and the cost of proximity to power run throughout, making this as much about narrative control as it is about history itself. A dense but rewarding read that embraces ambiguity. #TheScapegoat #HistoryBooks #KingJames #DukeOfBuckingham #RoyalHistory #HistoricalBiography #PowerAndPolitics #BookReview #NonfictionReads #HistoryLovers

Wonderfully detailed and perceptive biography of Buckingham, one of the most fascinating subjects in English history. We learn about his ascent, his charms, and his complex relationships with James I (who was a deeply sympathetic figure), Charles I, and many others. The story of Buckingham's adventure to Spain with Charles in tow is a highlight of this excellent book. I can't recommend it any more highly.

Hughes-Hallett is a reader of the highest order. To hear her recite "No money. No Money. No Money" is a thrill.

Brilliant, touching biography of The Favorite

I had very little understanding of this time in history being raised in the United States where one doesn’t learn about the English Civil War or events leading up to it. This book gives a good background of how court life was, how poor decisions on the part of those in charge of a nation ruin lives of many. I’m glad I listened to this and hope others do or read it as well. I also purchased a paper copy to see pictures and more easily re-read some sections.

Interesting piece of history
