One rainy morning in the winter of 1909, a man with an altogether average look about him quit his job at the London Morning Leader, kissed his wife and children goodbye, and took a train to Swansea in Wales, where he talked his way aboard a freighter bound for somewhere in the upper reaches of the Amazon. I have enjoyed reading a great many classic travel narration books spanning travel and exploration in the 18th and 19th century. This book is a really solid story and written with a splash of humor that reminded me of Twain. But, I found the his voice annoying which got in the way of the story. He read well but his vocal quality was off putting to me.

This is a very entertaining and interesting story, particularly if you are familiar with some of the flora and fauna of the Amazon. But I might consider another production of this audiobook as the narrator's voice is highly distracting. His intonations seem out of place, and I find it hard to believe that he is the type of person to pull through such an arduous journey.

This book tells a great story that deserves to be more widely known. As always, Frederick Davidson’s reading is brilliant.
