A teenage suicide. A murdered pharmacist. A missing girl. Is the obvious connection the right one?

When a boy leaps to his death from a bridge in the northern town of Umeå, Sweden, police discover drugs scattered in the snow near his body. The town has seen a dramatic increase in narcotic use among its youth, but nobody knows where the pills are coming from.

Relocating from Stockholm with her teenage daughter, Detective Charlotte von Klint expected Umeå to be a quiet backwater, a snow-covered change of pace from fighting the criminal underworld of the capital. But when a pharmacist is found brutally murdered in her apartment, and a young girl and her dealer boyfriend vanish without a trace after a party, suddenly Umeå doesn’t seem so benign. And the boy on the bridge doesn’t feel like an isolated incident.

Is the dealer the perpetrator? Or just another victim? And can it be a coincidence that a shadow from Charlotte’s past, Syndicates boss Tony Israelsson, has recently been released from prison and is reportedly headed for Umeå?

As the snow deepens and the body count rises, Charlotte and her boss, local cop Per Berg, find themselves in a deadly pursuit, with time rapidly running out.

I enjoyed the characters and the story. I liked the relationships and the plot twist ending.

A good start

There were two many characters and lots of dialogue within their own minds that didn’t add to the story. Charlotte didn’t do anything significant to solve the mystery and wasn’t interesting overall. Too much talking about her clothes - who cares?! Per did most of the detective work. The making fun of other people’s clothes was unnecessary and stupid. The ending was wrapped up too neatly with the victim immediately confessing. Too easy. And the author set it up for more books. “Sigh”

Silly.

This is a bizarre book and certainly the heroine is unique although probably there’s a good reason for that. She’s Swedish Royalty and filthy rich, although in my estimation she behaves more like nouveau riche. She buys mansions and wears jewels and designer clothes to work. The males who work with her appreciate that apparently. There is some suspense. The plot revolves around high school drugs, parties and sexual assault. I listened to so many books like this! Please can’t someone old enough to have memories beyond childhood write a detective novel. The police department is also constantly missing important information. Like I’m not quite sure why a book about them should be written.

Good story and great narration. Twists and turns, kept me listening. Enjoyed the story and the narrator. New author to me. Looking forward to more from this author and narrator.

The story is good, well thouht through and really up there with other top danish crime stories. There is something strange though with the main character, Charlotte. She doesn’t possess any remarkable qualities as a police officer. She was certainly not instrumental in ‘solving’ the crime. But more importantly, she remains very shallow, sterile almost. We only know she is very wealthy but that’s about it. She isn’t very likable which would be a big plus when committing to a series of books.

There is a lot of attention on clothing and what everyone is wearing.

I found the performance of Stina Nielsen a bit too dramatic. Too much effort in every sentence. I prefer a more storytelling type

A well written, intelligent, crime book, but with a very shallow leading character
