A wrongfully convicted man and the key witness against him join forces to figure out who framed him for murder in a riveting novel of small-town secrets by USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb.

Every person in Pine Bluff, Alabama, stood behind Emily Wallace when she testified against Clint Austin. After all, Emily knows what she saw that terrible night: Clint, covered in blood, holding the body of her best friend Heather.

But Clint has always maintained his innocence, and now, after a successful appeal, he has come home to prove it.

The whole town is furious about his return, and Emily becomes obsessed with sending Clint back to prison—until her father reveals a devastating secret that casts doubt on the whole trial. What if she was wrong?

When another person with a connection to Heather turns up dead, Clint and Emily embark on a desperate search to find the truth. Because ten years ago, they were both betrayed by someone they know. So who, in a town full of liars, is getting away with murder?

The story in itself was really good but the female narrator made it hard to want to finish it. Her inflection was off and most of it was super choppy. It was almost robotic. The love scene was the worst I’ve heard and gave me the ick only because of her delivery. She seemed to do better when she was doing a male voice. If you can get past that the storyline was a good one.

Story was good but narration not so much

Other reviewers criticized female narrator but given the storyline of FMC her choppiness and kind of high emotive anxiety theme IMO worked. Kept me intrigued. MMC and male narrator was also on point. A southern twang enhanced the Alabama setting and he evoked a well rounded emotional response to the storyline. I would recommend

Different theme for DW

I have recently listened to most of Debra Webb, she is amazing at pulling things together and I never guess who the bad guy will be.

I love the ending.

The Twist you don't see

I almost DNF'd this one, but I never allow myself to quit on something that I begin. The basic premise of this book sounded good, but...

⛔️ Female narrator is so not tolerable:
- jerky & completely unnatural in speech pattern
- accents were cringe & really ruined it for me
- used the same almost scared-like tone throughout the entire book
✅️ Male narrator is fine
⛔️ 4/5 🌶 There are way too many overly (and completely unnecessary) detailed explicit scenes in this book (5 or 6?)! I wouldn't have even started it had I'd known; as soon as I'd skip over one, another would pop up! I felt like I skipped almost a quarter of the book 😵‍💫😒
⛔️ Poor characters - didn't like any of them!
⛔️ Ending was not satisfying 😔
