A Psychological Horror Novel with a Haunting Twist

A mind fractured. A house that remembers. A truth waiting in the dark.

When 28-year-old Nina Hale arrives at the eerie Hale House boarding home following her release from a psychiatric facility, she seeks peace. Instead, she finds whispers in the vents, mirrors that move, and a room across the hall that’s always locked.

The landlady insists it’s just storage. The tenants say nothing. But the house has its own way of revealing secrets—and Nina’s past is buried in its walls.

As memories flicker like faulty film reels, Nina begins to question not only the history of the house but her very identity. Why does the name Ella feel familiar? Why do the drawings, dolls, and dreams feel like warnings from someone long forgotten? And why does she keep hearing her own voice behind the door?

The Third Room is a chilling psychological horror novel that weaves memory, trauma, and identity into a haunting narrative that will leave you breathless—and questioning what is real long after the final tick.

I love how the story has little twists and turns. It really makes you think about what happened and about the house. The chapter summaries are new to me and I found them as helpful little recaps to get back into the story. The chapters are short so they're perfect for listening to in the car. The narrator's voice is very smooth! I enjoyed the performance. Great story and great narration!

One scene that absolutely gave me goosebumps was when Nina hears whispers coming through the vents, but it’s not just sound, it’s her name! spoken softly like the house knows her. That moment blurred the line between internal paranoia and external danger so well, I literally sat still after hearing it. It made me think.. what if trauma leaves behind a frequency only you can hear? The book plays with that tension, (memory, identity, and fear) until you’re just as unsettled as Nina herself..

You can leave the institution, but can you escape

I loved how the story blurs the line between psychological trauma and supernatural horror, and just when I thought I had things figured out, it twisted again. The narration was spot-on too, quietly haunting and emotional without being overdone. If you like horror that messes with your head more than your stomach, this one’s absolutely worth the listen.

Highly recommend

The narration and background music choices were exceptional in this book. I liked the story line, though it was a bit predictable. It would be much better if the chapter summaries were not there to interrupt the flow.

Excellent Performance and Background Music
