The Texas Panhandle was a harsh and unforgiving place, but the Zachary family managed to get by. Until their world was upended by an old enemy who started a vicious rumor about the true identity of beautiful 17-year-old Rachel Zachary. Now their neighbors want her dead, and a band of Kiowa warriors are out to claim her for their own. There's only one man who will stand up for her. But in protecting Rachel, he might just be signing his own death warrant.

My first review was when I thought I wasn’t going to be able to finish it:
“It doesn’t help that I’m 10 chapters in and I’ve heard more about cows and cattle and sod and soddies and handwringing women than is in ten standard westerns.”
Yet the next 30 plus chapters more than made up for the slow start. The narrator who I didn’t like listening to for extended periods became less bothersome and more impressive as his various character voices came into their own. If this is your first Alan Le May go listen to The Searchers next, it’s even better and the narrator for that one is easier to listen to.

Alan LeMay has written two of the greatest westerns ever. The Searchers and this book, The Unforgiven. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the old west and the encounters between our pioneers and Native American tribes.

Classic western

This was a great book with a lot of action and suspense. It was a good depiction of life at that time in the west. Much better than the movie.

Excellent read
