Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Unloved by Deborah Levy, read by Sally Scott.

A group of hedonistic West European tourists gather to celebrate Christmas in a remote French chateau. Then an Englishwoman is brutally murdered, and the sad, eerie child Tatiana declares she knows who did it.

The subsequent inquiry into the death proves to be more of an investigation into the nature of love, insatiable rage and sadistic desire. The Unloved offers a bold and revealing look at some of the events that shaped European and African history, and the perils of a future founded on concealed truth.

Critic reviews

A brave and brilliant book
One of the few British writers comfortable on a world stage
An exciting writer, sharp and shocking as the knives her characters wield
Deborah Levy's storytelling is allusive, elliptical and disturbing. Her touch is gentle, often funny and always acute
Graphic, claustrophobic and fractured, this is emotionally violent and challenging work from a bold modern writer.

Would you try another book from Deborah Levy and/or Sally Scott?

no

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sally Scott?

Someone who doesn't do ludicrously caricaturial accents. Eye am zee poleeceman, Ach nein - every cartoon accent in the shop gets pulled out, and I just can't stand another minute of it. Clearly this woman doesn't actually speak any foreign languages, possibly has never actually listened to what actual French, German or Polish people sound like.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

profound irritation

Any additional comments?

I'd rather hear a robot read this book in monotone, not inflected English.

Sally Scott's impossibly annoying accents
