‘Twas a time when dragons left their lair and evil shadowed the land....
On the Day of Reckoning, the witches of Eileanan were outlawed - and violations of the new order were punishable by death. Eileanan’s Great Towers, once meccas of magic and learning, were left in ruins. And now, the entire land trembles in fear.
Yet deep in the mountains, in the shadow of Dragonclaw, a young girl is being tutored in the old ways. Ignorant of her past, uncertain of her future, the foundling Isabeau will soon be forced down a dangerous path of prophecy, conspiracy, and magic. It is a world where dragons possess the key to ancient mysteries, where a lost prince will discover a strange and wondrous destiny, and where the ultimate battle between good and evil will be waged.
A new Day of Reckoning is at hand....

Also I feel I should address the rape scene that others have mentioned in their reviews: it is not as bad as they have made it sound. There is nipple pulling and fingering, but it’s over very quickly. The torture scene is an important turning point for Isabeau’s character so I feel like it was necessary and as tastefully done as such a scene can be. Compared to rape and torture scenes in many fantasy books (looking at you George RR Martin!) where such violence is flippant, gratuitous and doesn’t move the plot or character development forward, I was quite relieved it wasn’t as bad as others said it was. Don’t let this scene keep you from the story, if it is what’s holding you back.
Has potential but ultimately not compelling

Genuine character development in this first book; as another person commented, lots of exposition, but it’s quite a fleshed-out world that sort of needs it.
At first the (amazing narrator’s) accent was a bit difficult to follow, but I slipped into it after a little while. She was wonderful.
I definitely care about these characters, and love the world that’s been built. For fellow lovers of stories of magic, fae, etc. in a ‘medieval-ish’ setting, this is great. And I reeeally appreciated how earthy and Wiccan (in the true, natural, beautiful sense) this take on magic is.
