Blossoming out of a collaborative fictional landscape known as the SCP Foundation, whose mission is to "secure, contain, and protect" mankind from a variety of unexplainable entities, this fascinating novel from a British computer programmer contemplates the idea that the world is full of "antimemes." These are entities that by their very nature are impossible to retain or remember. While some are relatively harmless (like giant, gentle creatures who use antimemetic properties as camouflage), the more nefarious antimemes are devouring entire teams of scientists with no one the wiser. Because how do you fight an enemy you aren't even aware exists? a fantastic iteration of an already fantastic story, deftly standalone to those unfamiliar with the greater universe but inviting!

overall it was a great story/stories. The word Anger being cut off halfway through in one spot was a bit jarring and the long redacted section didn't translate as well to audio as I would have liked, but overall it was worth the wait. Also, I lost attention for the wrong second and spent the rest of the audiobook wondering what happened to the fairy. on a second listen, the story mentioned a river so it was a ferry, not a grey haired 50 year old fey fairy in the room with her.

The performance was very good, but the audio engineer needs to find a new job. The mix is terrible, and somehow every single glottal noise is magnified, making for an incredibly distracting and jarring performance.

A story born out of the online phenomenon, the "SCP Foundation." You don't need to know anything about it to read this book. It is indeed much better if you don't know the source material. This story is suffocating and addictive. It's complex and confusion. It doesn't hold your hand, much. It lets you feel insignificant and confused. Lost. Just like the protagonist. You are going to feel hopeless. You are going to be scared and horrified. This story plays on the deepest fears humanity holds: the unknown and the inevitable. It plays them like a violin all the way to the end.

This is not a book you can set down halfway through. It's one horrifying current to a conclusion, one you're scared to learn. This story is deeply human despite its complexities and lofty concepts. It's heart wrenching in ways few books manage. It can't be said that this story is flawless. It is, however, one of a kind. You will not forget it, which is a little ironic, considering it's contents.

I am a fan of HP Lovecraft and the Cthulu IP. This is somewhat a blend of science fiction and Lovecraft style horror. I think there are some very original and new ideas in this book. For that alone it's worth reading/listening. Being original is so rare these days. I found the book entertaining but not stellar. I imagine variations on these ideas will now be picked up by other authors.

Then again they may strangely forget these ideas after reading them......
