Man wakes up one day to find himself trapped in a completely dark room, no light, no doors or windows. Scared and unsure where and why he is in this dark room he begins recounting his past events. He discovers his only escape from this room is through his own personal thoughts, sleeping dreams and nightmares. Desperate he tries to feel the walls but is unable to connect with any kind of solid construction. He begins walking, then running, but no matter what he does he remains in this total pitch black room. He obviously shaken, scared and feeling helpless, hopeless starts to scream for help but no one hears him. Feeling defeated he begins thinking, putting himself in any place but where he is right now in this moment. Soon he tires and falls asleep and within that sleeping he dreams that he has finally escaped from the black room only to wake up and find himself alone in the dark room. A character study of a man trapped in a dark room without any possibility of any kind of escape. At the end of the story the man realizes he is in this dark room for eternity. He learns to accept his thoughts, dreams and nightmares as his only way out from the dark room:

Victor Hargrove awoke once more in the suffocating embrace of darkness. The void had become a familiar companion, its silence a constant reminder of his isolation. He had spent what felt like an eternity in this endless black, where time lost all meaning and hope flickered like a dying candle. The memories of his vibrant dream—the garden, the laughter, the warmth of his late partner’s hand—had faded like the last rays of sunlight, leaving him to confront the profound loneliness of his existence.

He sat up, or at least he imagined he did, in the same way one might sit in a chair that wasn’t there. The weight of isolation pressed down on him, a tangible force that made it hard to breathe. He felt as if he were suspended in a void, untethered from the world he once knew. The absence of human connection gnawed at him, a relentless ache that pulsed through his chest. He could almost hear the echoes of laughter, the soft murmur of conversation, but they were mere phantoms, teasing him from the edges of his memory.

“Hello?” he called out, his voice trembling as it sliced through the silence. The word hung in the air, swallowed by the darkness, and he felt a shiver run down his spine. No response.
Just the echo of his own desperation bouncing back at him.

Victor pressed his palms against his eyes, willing the darkness to recede. He could feel the edges of his sanity fraying, like an old tapestry unraveling thread by thread. In a desperate attempt to regain control, he began to recite the names of the people he loved, the ones who had shaped his life. “Mom. Dad. Clara. James.” Each name was a lifeline thrown into the abyss, but the void remained unyielding, indifferent to his pleas.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady the whirlwind of thoughts swirling in his mind. “Focus,” he whispered to himself, the sound barely audible in the oppressive silence. “You can do this.” He remembered a mental exercise he had learned during a particularly challenging period in his life—a way to ground himself when everything felt overwhelming.

Victor envisioned a warm light, a soft glow that began at the center of his chest and radiated outward. He imagined it enveloping him, pushing back the darkness...
