Two sisters vie for a notorious Marquess in this historical romance by bestselling author Marion Chesney

Must one sister suffer in poverty while the other lives in the lap of luxury? This question plagued Harriet Clifton incessantly. Inviting herself to her widowed sister Cordelia's posh London townhouse for the season was surely the only way to meet a suitable partner - as well as escape drafty old Pringle House forever.

The vain Cordelia was meanwhile casting her net for the notorious Marquess of Arden, a man who would rather court a mistress than wed a wife.

Who would have believed that the Marquess would succumb to Harriet's countrified charms? - or that Cordelia would stoop quite so low as to try to conquer the Marquess at her own sister's expense?

A light listen with no real content. A bit of fluff to listen to after a long day. Lindy Nettleton narrates this well. The story was totally unrealistic but that is not why I listened to this type of fiction.

All of the usual Marion Chesney romance elements - sweet girl, pretty but in an unfashionable way and poor, meets rich rakish aristocrat. Everyone is against them, but they still manage to fall in love. This one is different, however, because it has the addition of three of the best and most hilarious ending twists, ever!

Best ending ever!

this was a good one. female lead was spunky. Male lead was mostly honorable. there were some good hijinks without too much frustration. the only thing i didn't like was that i didn't see any reason for cordelia to be a villain. what was her motivation? that part didn't make sense.

a good one

So much better than I expected. Though admittedly predictable, the twists and turns of the tale were skillfully crafted and the characters were masterfully created. The touches of comic relief were almost laugh out loud funny and perfectly placed. I have read a number of Beaton’s romances and this was by far the best to date.

Absolutely loved it!

Not a gripping tale, but very amusing and silly.
The story is very retro, and puts the aristocracy in a comical, but not unlikeable, light.

Amusing
