Max Culp escaped his low-tech home world by serving in the marines as a medic. Unable to adapt to civilian life as a medical intern, he joined Special Forces to track down the Phib war criminals who caused his recurring nightmares. By the time the final Phib is captured, Max has become an urban legend among the aliens. He isn't sure how to apply those skills to a new life until someone kidnaps his last surviving friend.

Much of the information comes too fast, with an alien race or war or planet given clues but not entirely explained. These bits are like jigsaw puzzle pieces being slammed down as the human merc healer and satyr (goat) helper converse for another caper against a turtle guilty of genocide on a high crime planet. Several more twists and turns (the hilarious reason for them comes out a few chapters later) and then another caper is getting set up. That closes up chapter one, and by then the rookie recording errors are over. (The author should re-record the first chapter)
It's been awhile since I've seen so much character building and universe building by the end of a first chapter, all in the midst of action. I like that the author never slows down. Lots of good science in the mix as well.
This is great science fiction. Highly recommended.
Never a dull moment in this epic
