A woman’s surprising inheritance opens the door to her family’s secrets in a moving novel about healing, forgiveness, and second chances by New York Times bestselling author Mariah Stewart.

Kit Porterfield is coping with the upheaval of her personal life when another shock blindsides her. Maxine Meadows, an aunt she never knew existed, has bequeathed to her a rustic campground in Maine. With it comes a long-buried family secret that Kit’s late mother took great pains to hide for her entire life.

When Kit arrives to tenuously claim her inheritance, she learns the town’s history and finds the lakeside sporting camp and its beautiful wooded acres in need of restoration to their former glory. But it’s Kit’s own history that compels her to stay, and she’s not returning home until she uncovers the secrets that tore two sisters apart so many years ago.

Kit soon discovers clues in old photographs and in the tale of a tragic and enduring love story, but the most startling revelations are yet to come. For Kit, they could be the path to understanding the mystery that defined her mother’s life—and her own.

The story grabs you and doesn’t let go. I’ve never been to Maine, but I feel as though I’ve just returned home from a remarkable visit.

this book was a really good I am I loved it it was about girl who finds out she has an aunt that her mother never told her about there are so many twists and turns in the story that I kind of guessed a little bit of it I didn't guess all of it though but oh my goodness there's such a good book I listen to it on audio but it was still really good I enjoyed it very very much I

Kit’s narrator needed to put some intonation into her dialogue! It was hard to like the characters! Still wondering why they needed to talk about bear spray so often!

Long winded story

While the book was good, by chapter 14 I had it figured out. The “mystery” wasn’t very mysterious. But, an easy “read” while working.

Predictable

This one felt like curling up with a cozy Hallmark movie, just in book form.
By the second chapter, you can kind of tell where the story is heading and start piecing together the mystery hiding underneath everything. The twist itself is fairly predictable, and you know pretty early on that this is going to be one of those stories where everything wraps up neatly in the end. Honestly, that’s part of the charm.
What really made this book work for me was the atmosphere. The small-town setting felt warm and comforting, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and the town itself almost becomes part of the family. Beneath the cozy surface, there are hidden family secrets, relationships strained by time and distance, and people trying to figure out where they truly belong.
I loved watching the family dynamics unfold through all the trials and changes they went through. Even when things got messy, there was always this underlying feeling of love, support, and hope running through the story. It’s predictable in the best possible way: comforting, wholesome, and satisfying.
If you’re looking for a dramatic, shocking thriller, this probably won’t be for you. But if you want something heartfelt, cozy, and refreshing that leaves you feeling good by the final page, this is absolutely worth picking up.
