Falling in love is the easy part.

It’s the late 80s when wealthy East Coast socialite Michelle Carver meets Scott McKallister, sun-crusted California local and frontman of an underground heavy metal band who flirts like he’s got nothing to lose. It’s instant chemistry. And when Scott promises a night she’ll have to lie about later, Michelle can’t resist.

“From the day I met Scott, life asked me to choose.”

Michelle’s status-obsessed family has plans for her that don’t include marrying down. When the secret romance is discovered, Michelle must decide between the future she was raised for and the man she’d risk everything to keep. Their story ends the way every romance promises: with a happily ever after.

But that was only the beginning.

Told across multiple eras, What Lasts is a story about love that survives beyond the honeymoon phase: when kids arrive, money gets tight, and real life moves in. Marriage isn’t about finding “the one,” or even learning to pee with the door wide open. It’s about choosing the same person, again and again. Scott and Michelle think they’ve figured that part out……until the day one of their children doesn’t come home.

Wow! Just wow! I have been waiting for this story for what feels like forever and I was NOT disappointed! The twists and turns… I mean, we know Michelle and Scott are still together based on the rest of the Cake series, but the situations they survived are heartbreaking, and not just Jake’s kidnapping and brutal torture. I think I’m going to listen to the whole series again (for the billionth time) so that I can relisten to What Lasts again.

Michelle’s transition to Scott’s life was believable, not forced. I hope the author creates an epilogue that shows how Jake’s horrific experience affected all his siblings and how they managed to overcome their trauma.

How well it lined up with the original stories

I love all of this book. There isn’t anything i didn’t like. It came with ALL of the feelings. It answered some questions i always had about how this two unlikely people came together and how they held it all together during all the crazy. I love finding out how Mitch came about, that has always been a huge question mark. I absolutely cried during the part where Michelle is on the phone with Jake and he is getting rescued. I think the fact that i had seen it from all the other angles with all of his siblings that to now see it on the parents side made it all full circle.

Something i do wish had been here is that Quinn and Grace have musical talent as well, and seen the unfolding of future careers for both of them. It would have been a really nice lead in to their books. This is about the parents but none of it talked about helping Keith through rehab or him almost dying on tour with Jake. I did like the more in-site to Mitch and his mom April. It felt more focused on Jake’s issues. And not on all of the kids. Also I don’t really see the “Scott” funny coming out till the end. Also would like to have seen Michelle being a teacher or her community service project.

Regardless of any of that it was such an amazing book. And I can’t wait to take my new knowledge of the family and read the other books again. I love seeing them grow as people and as parents. You see so many changes, and it makes sense how they became who they are in the other books. I am just so happy to have this addition to the Cake collection.

Thank you to the author for a wonderful book.

Loved this so much!

What a beautiful job of weaving together everything we’ve come to love from the earlier books. I laughed, I cried, and felt every moment along the way. This book absolutely did not disappoint

When I heard the author announce that she was going to write the parents story after writing all the children's story I wasn't necessarily excited I didn't know that I needed to hear their story. but boy was I wrong. What an absolute incredible story. this is more than five stars more than 10 Stars. This story if you haven't read cake yet which is the beginning of telling their children's stories each of their children's stories and this is the first book you pick up you will definitely read the rest after meeting all the children in this story, you don't have to read their stories first, might be better that you read this story first. These two fault to be together, because they're from opposite sides of the tracks. Once they were together they actually sometimes had to fight to stay together you know when you're that opposite sometimes things Clash a little and I loved that the author showed that. I also love that the author didn't hold back that you got to see the glimpses of the other stories that the children went through you got to see bits and pieces of their stories not enough to ruin their stories but enough that you're going to want to obviously go read their stories but also you got to see their point of view of what was happening which was very moving, very emotional for someone who read all the other stories and knew what happened in those stories I still bald like a baby when it came to certain parts of this book and I knew what was going to happen. I am being very cryptic on purpose I don't want to tell you I want you to experience it for yourself. because it'll be so so worth it. and these two narrators they're fairly new to me I had heard the female narrator once before I believe but the male narrator was totally new both of them were perfect absolutely perfect they put me in the story they were Michelle and Scott absolutely 100% I could picture him they did so so well telling this and bringing this all to life now it's time for a gosh darn movie set to pick this up and make a movie of this it is that good if you can make a movie of those other books you can make a movie of this. I definitely have to thank the author for this because this was the story I didn't know I needed to hear and I have to thank her for that.

Now this is a story
