Julie has an obsession with fire that began after her parents died when she was 12 years old. Her pyromania leads her to take an unlikely job as a forest firefighter on an elite, Type 1 "Hotshot" crew of forest firefighters who travel the American West battling wildfires. The only woman on the 20-person crew, Julie struggles both to prove her worth and find a place of belonging in the dangerous, insular, and very masculine world of fire. As her season "on the line" progresses so do her relationships with the strange and varied cast of characters that make up her hotshots team - and she learns what it means to put your life on the line for someone else. Wildfire is a tough, gritty, and fascinating story from an exciting new voice in American fiction. Fans of the movie Backdraft or Cheryl Strayed’s memoir Wild will enjoy this fast-paced debut.

Perfect storytelling

I don't normally try new writers. I stick to the authors I like and give everyone else a pass. I'm an old dog and new tricks are too much heavy lifting. That said, I actually enjoyed this story. It's character driven which puts you right into the action. You can feel the fire and sweat, dirt and grime, as they battle the monster they simultaneously love and fear.

The narration was okay. I prefer performance narrators. However, I very quickly was able to ignore that all the characters sounded the same.

I'm truly glad I gave it a go. Perhaps I have a couple of new tricks in me after-all.

A Great, Character-Driven Story

I fell in love with all of the characters. Great relationships. I also love the honesty and depth of the characters. The action of the fire crew had me on the edge of my seat

What great story

I could only make it thru chapter 5. Being a runner of marathons and shorter distances I can assure you that a mile and a half is a short distance and I could go all out. A woman in her prime might best me, one suffering from bulimia, not a chance. Realistically there is no way she could even do the exhausting work of a fire crew by not eating. What a disappointment.
