#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Small Great Things and The Book of Two Ways comes “a powerfully evocative story of resilience and the triumph of the human spirit” (Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six)

Look for Jodi Picoult’s new novel, By Any Other Name, available August 20!

Diana O’Toole is perfectly on track. She will be married by thirty, done having kids by thirty-five, and move out to the New York City suburbs, all while climbing the professional ladder in the cutthroat art auction world. She’s an associate specialist at Sotheby’s now, but her boss has hinted at a promotion if she can close a deal with a high-profile client. She’s not engaged just yet, but she knows her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is about to propose on their romantic getaway to the Galápagos—days before her thirtieth birthday. Right on time.

But then a virus that felt worlds away has appeared in the city, and on the eve of their departure, Finn breaks the news: It’s all hands on deck at the hospital. He has to stay behind. You should still go, he assures her, since it would be a shame for all of their nonrefundable trip to go to waste. And so, reluctantly, she goes.

Almost immediately, Diana’s dream vacation goes awry. Her luggage is lost, the Wi-Fi is nearly nonexistent, and the hotel they’d booked is shut down due to the pandemic. In fact, the whole island is now under quarantine, and she is stranded until the borders reopen. Completely isolated, she must venture beyond her comfort zone. Slowly, she carves out a connection with a local family when a teenager with a secret opens up to Diana, despite her father’s suspicion of outsiders.

In the Galápagos Islands, where Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection was formed, Diana finds herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself—and wondering if when she goes home, she too will have evolved into someone completely different.

Editor's Pick

Isolation and transformation on the Galapagos
The first question I asked myself before choosing Wish You Were Here as my pick this month was, ''Is it too soon? Can I handle a COVID-19, lockdown-themed listen while (still) working from home?'' But the whole idea of spending quarantine on the Galapagos Islands, especially in the hands of a writer like Jodi Picoult, fascinated me. And with Marin Ireland narrating! I was sold. So many people out there have spent the last many, many months reevaluating life choices on all levels, and some find themselves (like the characters in this story) reemerging changed, dare I say evolved. It’s not too soon to contemplate these things. To hear how Picoult’s characters fare in these bizarre times is simultaneously gut-wrenching and comforting—and totally entertaining. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

I have waited for this book for so long, especially after reading a descriptive summary about it months ago. Although i have not quite finished it i had to write a review to share with others how wonderful a book it is. I don't know if everyone will like it as much as I have. I really hope you all do!

I have not had covid but had an limb amputation after developing a severe antibiotic-resistant infection. I was in a medically induced coma for 3 weeks, in the ICU for 2, and had rehab for another 2 weeks. My dreams were not light but very dark. That Jodi chose to write about this subject and Covid 19 has been very helpful. She is my all time favorite author and that's saying a lot since I am 66 and a voracious reader.

I can not recommend this book highly enough. I am going to go back and read it again, and probably again later. Jodi's books always take one thing and focus in and then out, looking at a subject from this perspective and than that. I have learned so much from reading her books, and this book is the same and more. Other authors I read just don't accomplish this, not even close.

Read this book! It is just so darn good! I hope that you enjoy it just ss much. ☺

Amazing Jodi + excellent narration = 5+++

Love Jodi, but had I known this was a book focused on the horror of COVID I would not have listened.

Tired of COVID

The first half of the book was fairly interesting and engaging but the second half lost me. The character feels very passive in the last chapters of the book. I listened to the end, but the back half was not interesting.

The narration is great. And the author does a great job at capturing the experience of the COVID pandemic.

The 1st half is engaging. The 2nd half is so-so.
