In the second installment of the suspense-filled series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ian K. Smith, an ex-cop turned private investigator seeks to fight corruption on the streets of Chicago.

A Cadillac, a pistol, and a corpse make for another morning in Chicago. The body belongs to Walter Griffin, a prominent Black Chicagoan insider hailing from the city’s West Side. He ascended to the upper echelons of the mayor’s office only to meet his end in a watery grave at Wolf Point. Forensics finds his prints on the gun; it’s ruled a suicide.

But grizzled private investigator Ashe Cayne knows better.

Griffin’s children plead with a reluctant Ashe to hunt their father’s killer. They know their dad wouldn’t have taken his own life without a goodbye. And Ashe knows this town’s dark secrets often mean murder is not too far away.

Ashe decides to take on the case and navigate a city rotting with corruption, racial tensions, and sketchy backroom deals. On the bleak streets of Chicago, it’s every man for himself - and that makes everyone a suspect.

Critic reviews

“[Amir] Abdullah's narration is perfectly matched to this gritty mystery. His characterizations are particularly strong as he uses authentic-sounding accents to differentiate the wide cast of characters ranging from Russian gangsters to social elites. He creates a likable, dogged detective in Ashe, and his spot-on timing keeps the plot moving.” (AudioFile Magazine)

“Smith’s love of Chicago is palpable in his rich depictions of its diversity, vitality, and unique pockets.... A brisk and twisty whodunit with a motley cast that includes the city of big shoulders.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Smith’s entertaining sequel to 2020’s The Unspoken.... This is smart, smooth escapism. Readers will hope Cayne will be back soon.” (Publishers Weekly)

I enjoyed this read. I am hard to please. The story was well written and wasn’t easily predictable. Definitely hoping Ashe is revisited in a series. There is some unfinished business to be handled in book 2 and 3!

I’m hoping this is only book 1

If you like a good crime sorry, check out Ashe Cayne's series by Ian K. Smith. Wolf Point is book 2.
Wolf Point has it all. Mystery, deception, crime, complex characters and back stories for days. I love how it all connects, comes together in the end. Ashe Cayne has become one of my favorite characters. I love his determination, drive and strength but also his vulnerability.

Ashe Cayne does it again

I really enjoyed the Ashe Cayne character ‘s ability to smoothly move thru all strata of Chicago life. He is both smart ( as in street smart) and clever (as in very well read). The story was well paced and interesting. I’m looking forward to another Ashe Cayne mystery!
