旧制高等学校の学生の「私」は、孤独な生い立ちからくる憂鬱から逃れるために、伊豆への旅に出た。途中、天城峠で旅芸人の一行と出会い、下田まで旅をともにすることになった。その中に、その踊子がいた。初めは17〜8歳くらいかと思ったが、露天の風呂から裸身をさらし全身を乗り出して手を振る無邪気な様子から、まだ14歳だと知る。自分を慕うまだ純真な踊子や素朴な旅芸人の一行と交わるうちに、「私」の心は温かくほぐれていく・・・。
清く、淡い初恋を描き、透明な抒情感に満たされている川端康成の初期の名作。
