Today we’re talking about something most of us experience but rarely talk about: shame. More importantly, we’re uncovering why shame often makes us hide behind a mask, repeat toxic behaviors, and even lie to ourselves and others—and what we can do to break free.
Shame is a deeply painful emotion. It’s that feeling that says, ‘I am flawed,’ or ‘I am not enough.’ Unlike guilt, which is about what we’ve done, shame is about who we are.
When we experience shame, the natural reaction is to protect ourselves. And one of the ways we do that is by putting on a mask. A mask is a persona we show to the world that hides our true feelings, our fears, and our vulnerabilities. While it can be helpful in the short-term, over time, it can trap us in cycles of toxic behavior.
