The long skirts. The courtship instead of dating. The deference to Jim Bob. The emphasis on modesty and submission. The enormous family size treated as a sign of God's blessing. None of that was invented by the Duggars. All of it came from the Institute in Basic Life Principles.IBLP's doctrine was built on a concept called the "umbrella of authority" — a hierarchical chain of command where God is at the top, followed by the father, then the mother, then the children. The teaching says that staying under your umbrella means spiritual protection. Stepping outside it exposes you to Satan. Every rule the Duggar family followed on camera traced directly back to this framework.The dress code — no pants, no sleeveless tops, hair styled specific ways — came from IBLP's teaching that the female body is an "eye trap" that must be concealed to prevent men from stumbling. The courtship model came from IBLP's ban on dating and its insistence that fathers control their daughters' romantic lives. The ban on secular music, specific toys, and outside media came from IBLP's comprehensive environmental controls designed to eliminate exposure to anything that might cause independent thinking.And the marriage doctrine — the part viewers never saw on camera — taught that a wife's submission is non-negotiable, that resisting physical intimacy is a spiritual failing, and that divorce is catastrophic regardless of circumstances.This is Part 2 of our five-part IBLP investigation.
