The P47 was an able workforce group of the Army AirCorps. After the atomic bombs were dropped and the U.S. was waiting for Japan to surrender, this aircorps did an 8 hour sorting that spanned over 1,800 miles. They faced off versus 50 Japanese fighter jets when there was 38 of them.
