  • Hope for the Prodigal Years | Karla Slonaker & Jaclyn St. John
    Mar 16 2026
“I am so thankful for my daughter’s prodigal years. They changed me from being arrogant, self-righteous and judgmental into a reflection of our Heavenly Father.” What a precious reminder that not only can God bring transformation in our children’s lives as we pray for them, but He also molds and shapes us into who He created us to be! Today we hear from a mother and daughter as they share their journey through the prodigal years and how the power and hope of prayer sustained them. The Moms in Prayer Podcast is a part of the Christian Parenting Podcast Network. To find practical and spiritual advice to help you grow into the parent you want to be visit ChristianParenting.orgABOUT OUR GUESTSKarla Slonaker Moms in Prayer was introduced to me 33 years ago at an informational meeting for moms of elementary school children. As I learned about MIP, I knew God was drawing me to prayer. I have benefited in so many ways, including learning the character of God and how to pray; having sincere, available prayer support, and experiencing hope and blessing while raising a prodigal teenager. Proverbs 3:5-6 is so true…”trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Now this daughter, Jaclyn, prays in a MIP group for her children and serves the ministry in her area and on our state team.My husband Fred and I have been married for 41 years. We have three adult children with spouses and nine grandchildren. We raised our family in Wenatchee, Washington and now live near them all in Meridian, Idaho. I heard God’s Spirit call me in March 2023 to serve the women of Idaho as State Coordinator for MIP. It is a huge blessing to support, train, develop leadership across this state as we pray and fast for the salvation of students. In addition to prayer ministry, I mentor young women of all ages and enjoy a variety of crafting projects.Jaclyn St. JohnI live in Meridian, Idaho with my husband, Cody and our children, Chloe (10) and Jaxon (7), plus two dogs and a cat! By profession, I am a Registered Dietitian with Dairy West but my most meaningful roles are as a devoted daughter, wife, sister, granddaughter, aunt, and friend who deeply values the people God has placed in my life.I have a passion for health and wellness that carries into both my professional work and everyday life. I enjoy nourishing others through nutritious food, healthy living, and spending quality time with family. Through laughter, movement and shared meals, I believe in celebrating life’s blessings and caring well for the people around me. It has been my privilege the last three years to serve Moms in Prayer Idaho alongside my mom, Karla Slonaker. Sharing our story of spiritual death to spiritual life has been a joy. She is my best friend!SCRIPTURESNot by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6b ESV“Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches!Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord!Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.” Lamentations 2:19 ESVTrain up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 ESVFor where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20 ESVWho is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Romans 8:34 ESVFor by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 ESVNot only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
