Welcome to Season 4 – Episode 9!
In this episode, we descend into the suburbs of 1970s Houston to examine the case of Dean Corll, a man the world remembers as “The Candy Man,” but whose neighborhood knew as "The Pied Piper".
Behind the friendly persona was one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. Corll groomed and manipulated teenage boys, ultimately recruiting two of them - David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. - to help lure victims to his apartment. Corll orchestrated what was, at the time, the deadliest serial murder case in American history.
His story is a haunting look at how easily a predator can blend into the fabric of a neighborhood and how a system’s indifference toward "runaway" children can provide a monster with a three-year head start.
This is a case study in grooming, systemic failure, and the ultimate betrayal of innocence. This episode discusses sexual abuse, coercion, and violence against minors. Listener discretion advised.
The poison for this episode is Salted Caramel Old Fashioned.
If you want to drink with me, you’ll need bourbon, salted caramel syrup, and black walnut bitters.
Salted Caramel Old Fashioned:
- 2 oz Bourbon
- ½ oz Salted Caramel Syrup
- 2 dashes Black Walnut Bitters
- Pinch of sea salt
In a mixing glass, stir the bourbon, syrup, and bitters with ice until chilled. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with a thin slice of green apple or a piece of hard caramel candy.
Enjoy!
