• Theravada Buddhism | AJAHN SIM : WE CAN UNBURDEN THE MIND (1975)
    Apr 21 2026

The suffering we encounter every day... where does it truly come from? It isn't because the world around us is heavy, but because our own minds refuse to let go. Before an old story has even faded, we rush to pull a new one onto our shoulders. Repeating this again and again, we become like the madman carrying stones, who, upon seeing anything, picks it up and adds it to the burden, even though what is already carried is heavy enough to make one collapse. This makes us feel as though each stone is heavier than a mountain...

    In this episode

    (00:00) Introduction

(08:43) The Parable of the Madman Carrying Stones

(18:55) "Plong Tok": Letting the Burden Fall

(32:00) The Path of Practice: Realizing the Truth Within

📜 ABOUT THIS TEACHING & TEACHER

    About This Dhamma Talk:

This content is adapted from a Dhamma talk given by Ajahn Sim Buddhacaro, a noble monk of Wat Tham Pha Plong in Chiang Mai, on Oc-tober 10, 1975.

    About the Teacher:

Ajahn Sim Buddhacaro of the Tham Pha Plong Monastery in Chiang Mai was one of the key disciples of Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, who prophesied about him, saying, 'Venerable Sim is a lotus bud; when it blossoms, its fragrance will surpass all others.'

His prominent teach-ings emphasized the 'full lotus posture' to cultivate a courageous mind like the Buddha's; an expertise in 'contemplation of the body,' particu-larly the meditation on impurity concerning the 300 bones; and the con-stant teaching to develop 'mindfulness of death' , or being mindful of death with every breath, as a reminder not to be heedless and to hasten one's spiritual practice.

📜 ABOUT THIS TEACHING & TEACHER

    About This Dhamma Talk:

A mind that lacks mindfulness as a guardian to watch over and guide it tends to go out and carry, haul, and heap everything upon itself, giving rise to suffering. It can get to the point where some people are overcome with anguish, seeing everything as unpleasurable until it becomes toxic and dangerous.

    About the Teacher:

Ajahn Waen Sujinno, the holy monk of Doi Mae Pang, was held in the highest reverence by King Rama IX, yet he remained content with the simple, ascetic life of a humble forest monk. When he met Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, who gave him a brief but life altering teaching—'All the knowledge you have learned, set it aside for now... from this point on, you must only meditate'—he therefore left his texts be-hind and headed into the forest to pursue true meditative practice.

The mind eats them without knowing that... this is Suffering.

📜 ABOUT THIS TEACHING & TEACHER

    About the Teacher:

Ajahn Khao Analayo of Wat Tham Klong Phen was a preemi-nent disciple of Luang Pu Mun, revered as the 'Flawless Diamond' of the Forest Tradition. Known for his resolute endurance, his core teach-ing emphasized 'letting go' of the past and future.

Notably, he attained enlightenment through a profound contemplation of 'rice grains' in a field. He constantly urged disciples to purify their minds to be 'White' (as his name implies) through present mindfulness. King Rama IX held him in high esteem, frequently visiting him for Dhamma discussions.

📜 ABOUT THIS TEACHING & TEACHER

    About the Teacher:

In an era when Dhamma practice began to de-cline, Luang Pu Sao Kantasilo stood as the 'Taproot of the Army of Dhamma' (Kong Thap Tham) in the Vipassana lineage. He revived the 'Dhutanga' way—the austere practice of forest dwelling and meditation—which had nearly vanished, bringing it back to glory. His teachings emphasized practical action through the mantra 'Buddho.'

He was both the first meditation teacher of Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto and also his 'Sahadhammika' (spiritual companion). Together, Luang Pu Sao and Luang Pu Mun were like the two Great Commanders of the Dhamma Army. They established the Thai Forest Tradition's reputation for strict discipline and beautiful conduct, serving as the pillars that have upheld the practice oriented Buddhism to this day.

📜 ABOUT THIS TEACHING & TEACHER

    About the Teacher:

Somdet Phra Phutthachan (Toh Phromma-rangsi) , an immortal master monk of the Rattanakosin era, was held in the highest reverence by the king, yet he was content with the simple title of 'Khrua To'. He delivered his sermons with sharp wit and extended his compassion to all living beings. Even to a dog lying in his path, he would say, 'Dear layperson... please let me pass'.

'Phra Somdej,' one of the most revered sacred objects in the land, was created by him as a devotional offering to the Buddha, along with the sacred 'Chinabanchorn Mantra,' which he discovered and propagated until it became a protective shield for Buddhists everywhere.

    Mar 20 2026

In a world that spins ever faster, we often feel exhausted, confused, and yearn for a sense of peace. But this peace may not be as far away as we think. It is not hidden only in temples and monasteries, nor must we wait for a special time to sit with our eyes closed in meditation. In truth, this peace is hidden within every moment of our lives.

📜 ABOUT THIS TEACHING & TEACHER

    About This Dhamma Talk:
The teachings of Ajahn Phut Thaniyo, a Noble Elder (ariya thera), point to a simple path for us to discover this peace for ourselves. He teaches us to understand that meditation is not merely a matter of sitting with closed eyes, but of having "sati" , or mindfulness and full aware-ness, in every action. Whether we are standing, walking, sitting, lying down, eating, speaking, or even thinking, the practice of maintaining constant awareness in every breath is what is known as practicing medi-tation in daily life.

    About the Teacher:
Ajahn Phut Thaniyo, a master in the lineage of Luang Pu Mun, is a testament to a mind that conquered a cruel fate. His battlefield was not the untamed forest, but his own body, ravaged by a near-fatal illness. He transformed the shadow of death into his object of contemplation, observing his physical decay until he broke through fear into a state of liberated peace. This direct confrontation with mortality infused his teachings with a profound, simple compassion that genuinely reached the hearts of ordinary people. His legacy is the powerful proof that even from the depths of the greatest suffering, the light of the Dhamma can brilliantly arise.
