A unit of the Seventh Cavalry is on a mission over Afghanistan when their plane is hit by something. I never reached Rome, but then neither did Hannibal. I left him after the battle of Trebbia, taking with me his last remaining elephant, Obolus, and my friend, the slave girl, Tin Tin Ban Sunia. This book recounts the first month of our long journey.

Hannibal must transport 60 war elephants from Carthage in North Africa across the Middle Sea to Iberia. He has to train his people to accomplish this difficult task. The first part of this project is to load one elephant on a ship and sail to the East on the 18-day voyage. He has chosen his largest elephant, Obolus, to use in the training of his men.
