Englishman Charles Strickland leads the life of a mundane London stockbroker. He has a wife and two children and enjoys a settled life with the prospect of a prosperous retirement. Robert Louis Stevenson, (1850 - 1894), was born in Edinburgh. His life has always held a fascinating romantic attraction, especially for his contemporaries. Although known primarily for the novels Kidnapped and Treasure Island, his works are by no means reserved for the youth market.

But he soon adopts an orphan child quite by accident. The exchange of one treasure for another is the heart of the story.

Ferdinand Lot (1866-1952) was one of the great historians of his generation, and the transition from Roman to Medieval civilization was a process that fascinated him most of his life. Rather than placing the emphasis for Rome’s fall on purely political or military reasons, Lot put forth multiple explanations for the birth of the Middle Ages which embrace not only politics and war, but linguistic, geographic, cultural, social and economic factors.

Listening to The Satires by Juvenal is to come face to face with the corruption, the debauchery, the waste, the sloth, and the mean-spirited greed of ancient Rome...or is it more like modern times? Indeed, these masterpieces of biting social commentary could easily have been written today about any number of metropolitan areas we are all familiar with.
