Das nur zur Tarnung existierende Literarische Büro von Romney Pringle erhält seinen ersten Auftrag: Ein Pfarrer bittet Romney Pringle darum, einen Stellvertreter für ihn zu suchen, damit er in den Schottischen Highlands auf Recherchereise für ein Buch gehen kann. Statt nach einem echten Geistlichen zu suchen, übernimmt Pringle diese Rolle kurzerhand selbst und lernt als Prediger Charles Courtley den Maharajah von Satpura kennen, der gerade in der Region zu Gast ist.

Romney Pringles alter Bekannter John Windrush besucht ihn in seinem Büro und bittet um seine Hilfe: Eine seiner Cousinen steckt in Schwierigkeiten, weil sie einen Brillant-Stern als Pfand verliehen hat. Damit ihr Ehemann das Fehlen nicht bemerkt, erhielt sie eine geradezu perfekte Nachbildung aus Simili-Brillanten. Doch als die echten Brillanten gestohlen werden, droht das diskrete Pfandgeschäft aufzufliegen und sie in Erklärungsnot zu geraten. Romney Pringle macht sich also auf die Spur des Brillanten-Diebs – und die führt ihn auf eine Fähre nach Rotterdam.

Romney Pringle wird im Urlaub an der englischen Ostküste von einem alten Mann für einen gewissen Herrn Coatbridge gehalten, dem er zum Verwechseln ähnlich sehen soll. Als Pringle erfährt, dass ein guter Freund dieses Herrn Coatbridge in eine Heilanstalt gebracht wurde, weil er dem Wahnsinn verfallen sein soll, wird er neugierig. So macht er sich in der Rolle seines Doppelgängers auf, die Geheimnisse dieser Heilanstalt zu erforschen – und bestenfalls selbst Profit aus der Geschichte zu schlagen.
