Bâtard is a short story by Jack London, first published in 1902 under the title Diable - a Dog in The Cosmopolitan. The narrative follows Black Leclère, a hunter, trapper, and adventurer in the Northwest at the time of the Alaskan gold rush. They were both devils - one in human and one in canine form. For five years, the two of them roamed the north, from St. Michael's and the Yukon delta to the head-reaches of the Pelly and even as far as the Peace River and the Great Slave Lake.

In this novel the main protagonist Buck, a St. Bernard/Collie mix, is abducted and sold to a trainer of sled dogs in Alaska. The Call of the Wild is a short adventure novel by Jack London, published in 1903 and set in Yukon, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska.
