Humor and overall literary style have changed a lot in the 132 years since this book was published in 1889. However, the information remains informative, primarily because there is a certain amount of truthfulness about it that manages to disregard the passage of time. It takes in some unusual events that either did happen, or could have. It involves three men and a dog that is sometimes smarter than any of them. Between them, they come up with some depth of thought and at least a minor ability to understand human nature.

Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927) was an English writer and humorist, best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat. An early life of poverty exacerbated by the death of his parents in his early teens helped to cruelly mould the young Jerome. After early stints on the railways, as an actor, a journalist, a school teacher, a writer, and a solicitor's clerk he had some minor success with a collection of comic personal essays On the Stage - and Off about his earlier stint as an actor. Shortly thereafter he married and his honeymoon on the Thames became the inspiration for Three Men in a Boat.

This time, the three companions J, George, and Harris take a bicycle tour through the Black Forest in Germany.
