John Matthews studied and taught Greek and Roman History at Oxford for many years, first as Junior Research Fellow of Balliol College and as Official Fellow successively of Corpus Christi and Queen's Colleges, before leaving to take up a senior appointment at Yale in 1996. He is now Emeritus Professor in the Departments of Classics and History at Yale. He was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1990. His first book, Western Aristocracies and Imperial Court, AD 364-425, was published in 1975, and was followed by Atlas of the Roman World (with Tim Cornell) of 1982, The Roman Empire of Ammianus (1989), Laying Down the Law: a Study of the Theodosian Code (2000), The Journey of Theophanes (2006), Roman Perspectives (2010), The Empire of the Romans, in two volumes (2021) and currently in Press, a study of the early history of Constantinople. He lives in New Haven with his wife Veronika Grimm.
