Ken Cam (1921–2010) was a World War II RAF Spitfire pilot, a prisoner of war, and a survivor of some of the war’s darkest chapters—including the infamous Death March of 1945 and imprisonment in the same POW camp later made famous by The Great Escape. At just twenty years old, with barely three weeks of flying experience and no weapons training, Ken was thrown into combat. His wartime journey took him from the skies over England, France, and North Africa, before crash landing in Italy on the remote island of Linosa. Captured by Italian forces, he faced a surreal prisoner transfer that included travel by submarine, cattle train, and eventual handover to SS troops. But Make It Do, the book he began writing more than 50 years later, is not just a war story. It’s a tribute to family, resilience, and the quiet dignity that defined his life. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Ken lived by the same wartime mantra his mother had passed down to him before he enlisted: “Make it do.” After the war, Ken became a skilled engineer and self-taught mechanic. He built his own car and refrigerator from scratch, renovated homes with tireless care, and served as a respected company treasurer for two decades. He was a man of quiet confidence, fierce intelligence, and deep humility—loved by his family, admired by colleagues, and never the same man twice to a stranger. Ken completed Make It Do in 1999, at the urging of his children. It was, above all else, a gift to them—a story he had never planned to tell. In the final years of his life, that story became a legacy.
