Marie-Alice Harel is an award-winning French author and traditional illustrator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is self-taught, having started a freelance career in 2016 after working as a researcher and earning a PhD in geosciences. She won the Book Illustration award in 2019 and has worked with publishers on books for readers of all ages, as well as galleries in the USA, UK, and France. She illustrated covers for Katherine Rundell, designed the 2024 Britannia coin for the Royal Mint, and has illustrated classics for The Folio Society such as Howl’s Moving Castle and The Neverending Story. She has been teaching book illustration since 2018, sharing her love for visual storytelling with students around the world. When not working for clients, Marie-Alice writes, illustrates, and designs her own books – all of which have been recognized by the BBDPA (British Book Design and Production Awards).
