Robert Henry Benson was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in a world shaped by hard work, the South Texas landscape, and the kind of characters who leave their mark on a boy forever. He earned a B.S. in Physics from Texas State University–San Marcos and a Ph.D. in Physics from Texas A&M University, where he specialized in Cosmic Ray Physics. He went on to build a distinguished academic career spanning nearly three decades, serving as a tenured Professor at Texas A&M University–College Station and later at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. His research career ranged widely, from cosmic ray scintillations to bioacoustics, from sperm whale communication to the repertoires of songbirds. He studied American Kestrels on South Texas roadways, tracked marine mammals with passive sonar, and designed acoustic camera systems, publishing in journals from Geophysical Research Letters to Applied Acoustics. He supervised dozens of graduate theses and dissertations and was recognized for his commitment to bringing modern technology into the classroom. He is currently CEO of R & K Benson Ecological Consulting. A Small Tree in a Texas Hurricane is his memoir, the story of a boy his own mother wasn't sure would amount to much, who grew up to become a scientist, a teacher, and a man. It is a book about the South Texas of the mid-twentieth century, about fathers and mothers and the silences between them, about the hard and sometimes funny education that only life itself provides. It is about the people, like Otto Galvan on a construction scaffold in San Marcos, who teach you things no university can. And it is about what it means to bend in the storm without breaking. Benson lives in Normanna, Texas, with his wife Karen, to whom the book is dedicated.
